Misalignment of the jaws and teeth...
Orthodontic treatment in conjunction with periodontal treatment corrects misalignments of the jaws and teeth as prophylactic measures to prevent every form of mechanical stress on the gums.
Patients are being increasingly referred to the orthodontist to help correct defects in the periodontic (tooth-anchoring) apparatus.

The most common reasons for referrals are requests to:
| |
Correct crowded teeth in order to eliminate hiding places for bacteria
| |
Straighten tilted teeth in order to prevent periodontal bone degeneration on the tilted side of the tooth
| |
Relieve mechanical stress on the teeth in order to prevent recession of the gums
| |
Close an open bite and create a natural closing of the lips in order to prevent drying of the mouth and its damaging effect on the gums.
| |
Correct biting of the gums in order to prevent gum trauma.

Creating favorable conditions...
The essential aspects here are to create favorable conditions for later further treatment.
Correcting crowded teeth, for example, creates wider spongy bone septa with improved gum edges so that it becomes much easier to clean periodontal pockets.
Moving a tooth in an area with bone degeneration can cause the alveolar bone at this area to be regenerated.
A moving tooth brings its bone along with it.
This is important for the preparation of anchor teeth in prosthetic pretreatment.
